PODCAST

The Shiproom - Episode 2 - Assess your estate before you migrate: Nerdio Compass Demo

Episode summary

Every Citrix migration starts the same way: nobody actually knows what they have anymore. Years of policies, images, and tribal knowledge locked in one IT admin's head. Nerdio Compass is built to fix that, and this episode lands on the day it moves into public preview.

Host Christiaan Brinkhoff, Senior Director of Product Management at Nerdio, sits down with fellow Nerdio members Aaron Parker and Ken Goossens. Aaron was in end user computing before it was called EUC, back at NetWare 3.11. Ken spent 20-plus years in endpoint management, from SMS and SCCM through Intune and Windows Autopatch. Between them, they've watched this problem take a lot of different shapes.

Aaron frames what Compass is for as two questions: What have you got, and how is it being used? This conversation covers the first question in depth, including a full demo. The second is where the product is heading next, and Aaron and Ken both talk through what that takes to get right.

In this episode, they cover:

  • Connecting Compass to Entra ID and an Azure subscription
  • Pulling a Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops or Citrix DaaS estate through a read-only PowerShell collector, with an option to anonymize sensitive data first
  • Scoring delivery groups for Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 migration readiness
  • Importing Citrix published applications into Nerdio Manager as AVD RemoteApps
  • Translating Citrix policy settings into their Microsoft equivalents
  • Comparing two snapshots of the same source environment as a migration progresses

Ken also walks through what changed between private and public preview, why the team stopped treating a migration assessment as a one-time event, and the two things an AI assistant grounded only in a customer's own tenant data would have to get right before it ships.
