Today, we’re excited to announce Nerdio Compass, a new way for organizations to gain fast, actionable insights into their existing VDI environments and confidently plan what comes next while they move toward the Windows Cloud (Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, or AVD Hybrid).
For many IT teams, VDI environments—especially long‑standing Citrix deployments—have become mission-critical, deeply integrated, and increasingly complex. Yet when the time comes to modernize, migrate, or optimize, organizations often face a familiar challenge: limited visibility, outdated documentation, and unclear effort sizing.
Nerdio Compass is designed to change that—starting with discovery.
Introducing Nerdio Compass, our new VDI Discovery Tool (private preview)
The first capability in Nerdio Compass is what previously was called the Nerdio VDI Discovery Tool, launching initially with Citrix environment support.
During this private preview, the tool connects to your existing Citrix deployment and analyzes key aspects of the environment to help you understand configuration, usage patterns, and optimization opportunities without disrupting production workloads.
And this is just the beginning.
Support for existing Microsoft environments—such as Intune and Azure Virtual Desktop—as well as Omnissa, Horizon Cloud, and VMware Workspaces is coming, expanding Nerdio Compass into a broader multi‑platform discovery and modernization planning experience.
What Nerdio Compass analyzes
During the preview phase, Nerdio Compass focuses on foundational visibility into your existing environment, including:
- Environment structure and configuration
Understand how your VDI estate is built today: key components, workload layout, and dependencies. - Workload characteristics
Gain insight into session behavior and workload profiles that matter when evaluating modernization paths. - Early optimization signals
Surface opportunities to simplify operations, improve efficiency, and prepare for future platforms.
These insights help teams move beyond assumptions and instead work from measured reality.
From discovery to in-depth Windows Cloud: Windows 365 as the north star
Nerdio Compass is not a point‑in‑time assessment tool. It’s the starting point for a guided modernization journey.
By clearly understanding their current VDI environments, organizations can more confidently explore questions, such as:
- What does a move to Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop look like for us?
- Which workloads are good candidates for modernization today, and which are not?
- How can we reduce complexity while maintaining performance and user experience?
- Where do cost, scale, and operational effort truly sit?
Discovery provides the foundation needed to align technical reality with business outcomes.
Built for modernization, not just migration
While the preview begins with Citrix discovery, Nerdio Compass is built with a broader ecosystem vision in mind.
Upcoming platform support, including Omnissa Horizon Cloud, and Amazon Workspaces, will allow organizations to assess their environments consistently—regardless of their current vendor stack—and plan a more seamless transition toward Microsoft‑native solutions and Cloud PCs.
Compass is designed to support continuous decision‑making, not just single migrations.
Why this matters now
The VDI landscape is evolving rapidly. Organizations are balancing:
- Hybrid and remote work expectations.
- Increasing cost transparency and optimization pressure.
- Windows 365 Frontline or Cloud Apps.
- The need to simplify long‑running, complex VDI estates.
Starting a modernization initiative without high‑quality discovery data introduces risk.
Nerdio Compass helps teams start with confidence by understanding where they truly are today.
Are you excited? Join our preview!
Nerdio Compass is now available as a private preview, and we’re inviting customers and partners to participate, share feedback, and help shape the future of the tool.
Whether you’re early in your migration journey or actively planning next steps, Nerdio Compass is designed to meet you where you are.
This is just the beginning.
