The IT sector is shifting fast, and 2025 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for virtual desktops, cloud adoption, and workplace security. What will take center in 2025? We asked Nerdio experts—Amol Dalvi, VP of product and engineering, Liam Birch, UK and Ireland public sector lead, and CEO Vadim Vladimirskiy—to weigh in.

1. Cost efficiency will meet resilience in VDI and DaaS

While cloud VDI solutions have already delivered many benefits, the increasing focus on uninterrupted access will drive businesses to adopt new approaches that balance budget constraints with reliability needs, Amol anticipates a laser focus on keeping costs low without sacrificing uptime will significantly impact what businesses prioritize in the coming year. “Looking into 2025, the demand for cost efficiency coupled with robust business continuity will grow significantly. Customers are asking questions such as, ‘How do I ensure my AVD desktops remain accessible at all times?’ and ‘How can I meet stringent continuity requirements?’”

2. On-premises and hybrid VDI will make a comeback

While the cloud has dominated IT discussions in recent years, 2025 may see a surprising resurgence in on-premises and hybrid VDI solutions. Amol highlights Azure Local (formerly Azure Stack HCI) as a potential game-changer for organizations with stringent regulatory or data residency requirements.

Industries such as healthcare, finance, and government are leading the charge, seeking solutions that offer the control of on-premises infrastructure while addressing unique challenges, such as bandwidth limitations or completely disconnected environments. “Some environments even need total isolation from the internet, such as military operations or research facilities,” says Amol. “This trend underscores the growing need for hybrid approaches, where on-premises VDI complements cloud-based solutions to deliver the best of both worlds.”

3. Azure Virtual Desktop will solidify its leadership in cloud VDI

Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) is entering a pivotal phase of maturity in 2025, cementing its position as a leader in cloud VDI. “AVD’s reliability and Microsoft 365 integration are finally winning over cautious businesses,” says Amol. As the technology further stabilizes, more organizations are recognizing its potential to deliver flexible, scalable virtual desktop solutions tailored to their unique needs.

However, with Windows 365 gaining traction as a simpler, pre-packaged alternative, IT leaders will face a critical decision: prioritize AVD’s adaptability and depth, or lean into the ease-of-use that Windows 365 offers. The choice will ultimately come down to balancing workforce demands with operational goals as both platforms continue to evolve in their capabilities and appeal.

4. The public sector will see a cloud revolution

The public sector is poised for significant transformation in 2025 as cloud adoption accelerates across governments and public institutions. Liam highlights ambitious initiatives, such as the England National Health Service’s £2 billion digital transformation plan, which aims to boost productivity, improve cyber security, and modernize operations. “Many public sector organizations are at an inflection point, with aging data centers forcing IT leaders to rethink their infrastructure strategies,” he explains.

Liam also feels hybrid models are emerging as a key solution, where the cloud handles operations and less critical data while sensitive information remains securely on-premises. By shifting from traditional ownership models to subscription-based services, public sector organizations can achieve cost savings and operational efficiency, bringing them in line with their private sector counterparts.

5. Zero-Trust access will transform cybersecurity

Cyber threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and 2025 will be the year Zero-Trust access moves to the forefront of IT security strategies. “Zero-Trust eliminates the weak spots of traditional VPNs,” says Vadim. “This security model, which ensures conditional access based on verification, is rapidly gaining traction as organizations prioritize protecting their digital environments.”

By focusing on “never trust, always verify” principles, Zero-Trust technologies mitigate the risks associated with remote work, making them a must-have for IT teams. As businesses integrate these solutions, they’ll gain a dual advantage—secure infrastructure and supported employees who can work confidently from anywhere.

6. Empowered remote work will take center stage

Remote work is here to stay, but the companies that succeed will go beyond technology to create a thriving virtual workplace. Vadim stresses the importance of combining cutting-edge desktop as a service (DaaS) technology with a strong organizational culture.

“Technology enables remote work, but alignment, clear goals, and autonomy are what drive lasting success,” he explains. “As debates around productivity and office returns continue, one trend remains clear: employees increasingly demand the freedom to work from anywhere, on any device.” Organizations that provide this flexibility while fostering a cohesive and empowered culture will lead the charge in 2025, proving that innovation is as much about people as it is about technology.
