One of the country’s largest primary care pediatric practices (the “Organization”) is dedicated to providing the best children’s medical services. To support this mission, the Organization recently expanded its footprint significantly through several clinic acquisitions. However, rapid growth came with growing pains— and required an evaluation of systems, processes, and technology.
With regular acquisitions, a distributed pandemic workforce, expiring licensing, and hardware approaching end-of-life, the Organization found its on-premises Citrix farm both unmanageable and unable to keep up with the new national and global footprint.
A healthy solution
Moving to the cloud to replace the on-premises Citrix environment with Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) emerged as the natural choice, migrating and consolidating services from newly acquired clinics and supporting remote third-party vendors.
“As the business continued to scale, I knew the scope of the project would quickly become untenable,” said a core infrastructure engineer (the “Engineer”). “But based on my previous AVD experience, I knew Nerdio Manager for Enterprise was the clear solution for managing the platform.”
Once Nerdio was fully implemented, the Auto-Scaling feature had an immediate impact on the pediatric practice, “The cost savings from eliminating unused resources make Nerdio a no-brainer,” the Engineer noted. “Auto-Scaling allows me to do in a few clicks what would have taken extensive manual configuration of VMs (virtual machines) in Azure.”
Additionally, the image lifecycle management and pre-populated Scripted Actions feature in Nerdio has automated a lot of the administrative work, ensuring consistent, smooth AVD deployments and regular updates. And, with Nerdio’s analytics, the support team can dive into any host pool or VM and pull actionable performance and utilization metrics.
A prescription for success
Nerdio has increased efficiency and enabled the pediatric practice to improve response time to service requests.
“If approached with a brand-new use case, I can use one of our pre-existing images to easily and quickly accommodate the needs of our staff and patients,” the Engineer noted. “The majority of our employees aren’t technologists, so we want to make it as simple as possible for them to deliver the highest caliber of care to patients.”
Today, the Engineer singlehandedly serves 7,000 employees using 1,404 seats with 239 hosts across 24 host pools.
“The constant tweaking that would be required to maintain the environment with native Azure tools could never be done by one person, and the costs would be extraordinary,” remarked the Engineer.
With Nerdio, the Organization regularly sees savings of between 68-72% per month, equating to nearly $500,000 each year.
“During difficult economic times, Nerdio enables us to maintain a high level of performance at a reasonable cost,” concluded the Engineer. “Plus, the Customer Success team is phenomenal. As a support snob, I’d consider Nerdio’s ticketing process to be unmatched, but what it all comes down to is eliminating barriers to patient care.”
