When a company builds prosthetics, it’s not just shipping hardware—it’s delivering independence. For Ossur, a global leader in prosthetics and orthotics, every device they produce carries a life-changing purpose. But internally, Ossur was struggling with the weight of outdated IT infrastructure. Managing their Citrix environment required multiple admins, created unnecessary complexity, and pulled focus away from their core mission: helping people move.

A mission too important to be slowed by outdated systems.

Robert Sigurosson, a senior administrator at Ossur, described it simply: “Prosthetics are more than just devices. They’re lifelines. And we needed to stop spending so much time babysitting our backend systems so we could focus on people.”

The breaking point came when licensing challenges with Citrix became too rigid and costly to justify. That’s when Ossur turned to Nerdio and made the strategic decision to migrate their infrastructure to Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), managed through Nerdio’s intuitive platform.

Neil McLoughlin, Principal Technical Account Manager at Nerdio, led the transition. From the start, his role was more than technical—he had lived the Ossur experience personally.

A personal connection.

That human connection set the tone for the entire journey. Nerdio walked Ossur through every stage of the migration, simplifying the process and re-architecting their environment to better serve their teams. Seventy percent savings, zero regrets.

I’ve been an amputee for most of my adult life. I wear Ossur products every day. This wasn’t just another project for me. It was personal. I knew how much their work mattered because it changed my life.

The results were immediate—and striking. Ossur cut its licensing costs by an estimated 70%. Server needs were reduced, IT overhead shrank, and instead of needing a team of administrators to manage daily operations, a smaller, more focused group could now oversee everything through a centralized, easy-to-use console. That shift unlocked valuable time and energy—resources that could now be redirected toward improving patient outcomes.

“Nerdio provided the management layer we were missing,” said Robert. “AVD on its own is complex. Nerdio made it manageable—and in doing so, made our work more meaningful.”

More than a migration—an evolution

But perhaps the most unforgettable moment came in Sweden, when Neil visited Ossur’s team in-person and revealed something they hadn’t known: The man helping modernize their IT was also a direct beneficiary of their products.

“There aren’t many times in your career where you get to work on something so personal,” Neil said. “Ossur gave me the ability to do things I never thought I could. Helping them succeed—it’s the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done.”

That moment underscored a truth that often gets lost in conversations about servers, dashboards, and cost optimization: At the end of the day, technology should empower people.

For Ossur, Nerdio wasn’t just a vendor—it was a partner that made their mission stronger, leaner, and more human.
