COASTAL PLUMBING SUPPLY STARTED AS A SMALL STATEN ISLAND SUPPLY HOUSE IN 1972, BUT TODAY BUSINESS IS BOOMING.
With a market share all across the New York and the New Jersey Metropolitan area. But all of us here at Adar know that sometimes growth causes things to slip through the cracks (or in this case the pipes), and soon Coastal was dealing with patchy IT programs, system outages, aging equipment, and most likely some increased personal spending on Tylenol Extra Strength.
ABOUT THE CASE
While Coastal Plumbing Supply was great at distributing equipment to their clients for plumbing, heating, irrigation, HVAC, and more—they had a little more trouble with distributing information among themselves. That’s where we came in. But let’s dive into some of Coastal Plumbing’s more specific problems, shall we?
PROBLEM 1 – FLEXIBILITY
Coastal Plumbing’s original infrastructure was slow, inconsistent, and disconnected across all branches and stores— including the main office. An outdated terminal server held back the whole system, which was especially problematic when running backups. This led to the company completing fewer backups, putting them at major risk if a crash occurred.
With back-ups, you don’t want to try your luck. So we flushed all those problems away and introduced Coastal to their brand new private cloud IT solution that we built from the ground up: Nerdio. And after saying sayonara to all that old terminal server technology, we provided a full virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and made sure that backups happened (and often) to protect data. Now, all their data is safe in the cloud. Problem solved.
PROBLEM 2 – WORKING REMOTELY
While in-office productivity suffered at Coastal, remote productivity suffered even more. Access was slow and crashed frequently, and the absence of an exchange server on top of already constant data drain from signature pads kept the problems piling up. This left management spending all their time troubleshooting and tiptoeing around technical weaknesses, instead of growing their business and focusing on the bigger picture.
Our Nerdio team installed an exchange server and showed employees how to take advantage of its wealth of features. Now, the entire IT infrastructure is housed in two state-of-the-art data centers, which can be accessed from anywhere. That’s right: sweet, sweet freedom when users are away from the office. We also decided to split business applications into two different servers, according to best practices. Streamlined and simple, it’s as easy as that.
PROBLEM 3 – UNRELIABLE IT VENDORS
The IT Vendor that was supposed to be taking care of Coastal was doing anything but. Instead, they were experiencing delays in response, extremely high hourly fees, and a complete and blatant lack of pro-activity. Coastal even tried to buy a new expensive server themselves, but it still provided no relief. They were desperately in need of a partner who could take charge and provide a blanket solution.
First, we met with Coastal to completely understand their business, priorities, and goals. We worked closely with their stakeholders to create solutions that would not only work today, but also for the furthest days in the future— and together, we mapped out a transition plan to carefully overhaul the entire system. Our plan took into account Coastal’s complete range of technical and business needs to ensure a smooth, hassle-free process and increase the system’s reliability and long-lasting benefits. Now Coastal’s IT system, servers, desktops and software is all held in our private cloud, and our team manages everything.
